The air in the Philippines is different.

It carries jasmine sometimes, and salt, and diesel fumes, and something underneath all of it that Maite could never name — some combination of wet earth and warm pavement and open sky that she had not breathed in thirty years. She noticed it the moment the airplane door opened in Manila: a wall of heat and memory arriving at the same time, indistinguishable from each other.

She stood at the top of the jetway steps and breathed in.

There it is, she thought. There it still is.

She had not known until that moment how much she had been carrying the absence of it. How you can miss a smell the way you miss a person — incompletely, in waves, never quite at the right time. Her children had been born in another country. Her grandchildren called her Lola by video screen. Thirty years is a long time to be a continent away from the place that made you, and yet here was the air, unchanged, patient, waiting for her to come back and remember who she was before she became someone else.

She was going to see her father turn ninety years old. She was going to see brothers and sisters and cousins she had not touched in decades. She was going to eat food that tasted like her mother's kitchen and swim in water the color of glass and watch the New Year arrive over Manila Bay with her family gathered around her.

She picked up her carry-on and walked into the terminal, and the air followed her in.

She was already through passport control when she saw him.

He was standing past the arrivals barrier with the easy confidence of a man who was used to airports — not nervous, not checking his phone, just standing there the way some people know how to stand in a crowd, like the crowd has arranged itself around them. He was taller than she remembered. Or maybe she had simply stopped remembering correctly, let the years sand down the details until what remained was more feeling than image.

He saw her at the same moment she saw him, and the whole airport fell away.

Not literally. There were still announcements in Turkish and the smell of coffee from a nearby kiosk and a child somewhere to her left conducting a prolonged negotiation about a toy. But all of that moved to the background, became texture rather than content, and what remained was Ryan crossing the terminal toward her with her rolling bag rattling over the tile and Maria standing exactly where she was, not moving, because she had learned over twenty-two years of marriage that sometimes the best thing you can do is hold still and let the person you love come to you.

He stopped in front of her. They looked at each other for a moment. Then he kissed her — just once, just briefly — and took her bag from her hand.

"How was the flight?"

"Long," she said. "How's Istanbul?"

"Waiting for you," he said.

The perfume seller had the energy of a man who had been waiting his entire life for exactly this moment.

"This one," he said, pressing a bottle into Maria's hands before she had fully stopped walking, "is Chanel No. 5. Original. Very rare."

"Is it actually Chanel No. 5?" Ryan asked.

The man looked at Ryan the way one looks at a child who has said something both obvious and beside the point. "It is like Chanel No. 5," he clarified. "Same smell. Much better price."

The negotiation that followed lasted twenty-two minutes and covered, at various points: the seller's cousin who lived in New Jersey, the current price of roses in Bulgaria, whether Ryan looked like he was from Canada (Ryan said no, the seller said he had very Canadian eyes), the seller's personal philosophy on the nature of authenticity in fragrance, and a brief digression into Maria's hair, which the seller described as "like a painting, but better, because paintings don't move."

They bought two bottles. They did not need two bottles. They had not, before entering the Grand Bazaar, intended to buy any bottles.

"I don't even wear perfume," Ryan said, outside.

"I know," said Maria. "You were wonderful in there."
